Transforming the Data Model & Reporting Capabilities for One of North America’s Largest Propane Distributors

Our Clients

Engagement Overview

Our client is one of North America’s largest propane suppliers, serving nearly one million customer locations across the U.S. and Canada. To optimize operations and deliver better customer service, they needed reliable daily reporting on sensor issues, driver productivity, and delivery volumes. Their existing reporting was fragmented across multiple static reports and a complex data environment, which slowed decisions and limited visibility for managers and frontline teams.

TechBlocks was engaged to modernize the data model and transform the reporting ecosystem. We consolidated fragmented reports into a single, streamlined Power BI Premium–based Sensor Report, integrated data from 20+ tables, and improved both performance and usability. The result was faster decisions, better operational control, and measurable gains in efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Key Challenges

The client’s data & reporting environment was complex, fragmented, & difficult to use.

Managers needed a daily view of sensor performance, driver productivity, and delivery volumes, but data quality issues, multiple static reports, and poor usability made it hard to get timely, actionable insights. Users spent too much time navigating reports instead of acting on information.

Complex Data Environment with Quality Inconsistencies

The data model integrated more than 20 tables from multiple systems, each with different structures and levels of data quality. Inconsistencies across these sources made it difficult to build reliable daily reporting on sensor issues, productivity, and volumes. Analysts spent significant time reconciling data rather than driving insight.

Fragmented, Static Reporting for Operations

Managers had to navigate multiple static reports to understand sensor status, operational exceptions, and delivery performance. There was no single view that combined the most critical information. This fragmentation limited visibility, slowed root cause analysis, and made daily operational management more reactive than proactive.

Poor User Experience & Cumbersome Navigation

End users struggled with cumbersome navigation and static report headers. Switching between reports and views required multiple clicks and context changes. This created inefficiencies, increased the risk of user error, and discouraged broader adoption of reporting tools across teams.

Slow Decision-Making & Limited Responsiveness

Because the environment was hard to use and the data was not presented in a dynamic way, managers lacked the timely insights needed to respond quickly to sensor issues or operational disruptions. Decisions were often based on delayed or incomplete information, which undermined productivity and customer satisfaction.

Approach & Solutions

1. Data Integration & Sensor Reporting Foundation

We started by consolidating fragmented datasets and reports into a single, trusted reporting foundation. The goal was to integrate key data sources, stabilize the data model, and create one central Sensor Report that leaders could rely on every day.

  • Integrated diverse data sources and 20+ tables into a single reporting interface focused on sensor status, exceptions, and operational issues.
  • Rationalized and aligned data structures to reduce inconsistencies and improve data quality for daily operational reporting.
  • Built the consolidated Sensor Report on Power BI Premium to leverage its performance, scalability, and enterprise features.

2. Reporting Experience & UX Redesign

Once the data foundation was stable, we redesigned how users interacted with reports. We focused on reducing clicks, simplifying navigation, and making it easy to access relevant sensor views without opening multiple reports.

  • Designed custom navigation that allowed users to switch between sensor pages with a single click instead of juggling multiple standalone reports.
  • Structured report layouts to group related metrics and views together, reducing the cognitive load for managers and frontline users.
  • Optimized key pages for common workflows such as daily sensor checks, exception monitoring, and productivity reviews.

3. Advanced Analytics & Interactive Reporting

We then enhanced the reporting layer by making the visuals adaptive and responsive to user selections. The objective was to move beyond static headers and tables to interactive views that responded to slicers and context.

  • Implemented dynamic Power BI tables that adjusted visuals and headers based on slicer values, providing context-aware views for different segments or regions.
  • Configured report elements to update in real time as users filtered by time period, geography, or operational category.
  • Created a responsive reporting environment that allowed managers to drill into issues quickly without leaving the primary report.

4. Governance, QA, & Continuous Improvement

To make the solution sustainable, we embedded governance, testing, and feedback into the delivery process. The focus was on accuracy, reliability, and continuous alignment with evolving operational needs.

  • Established rigorous development and QA processes to validate data consistency and report behavior before releases.
  • Set up structured user feedback loops so frontline teams and managers could highlight issues, request enhancements, and drive improvements.
  • Deployed ongoing monitoring and updates to keep reports aligned with changing business requirements, setting a new standard for transparency and user experience across the reporting ecosystem.

Impact & Results

By transforming the data model and reporting experience, the client gained a single source of truth for operational sensor data and a streamlined way to monitor performance.

Managers and frontline teams accessed information faster, made decisions more confidently, and responded more proactively to issues. This translated into measurable improvements in responsiveness, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

20%

Boost in operational responsiveness

Operational teams became 20% more responsive because they had faster, more accurate reporting on sensor issues and performance. The unified Sensor Report reduced time spent gathering data and allowed managers to act on issues as they emerged.

35%

Faster access to sensor reports

Access to sensor reports was 35% faster. Users moved directly into the views they needed without navigating multiple static reports, which accelerated issue identification and resolution.
