Modernizing Investment & Insurance Services for Canada’s Dental Community
Our Clients
Engagement Overview
Our client is a leading Canadian financial services organization providing investment, insurance, and advisory services exclusively to dentists and dental practice owners. The organization supports members throughout their financial journey, including early career planning, wealth accumulation, business ownership, retirement, and risk protection.
TechBlocks was engaged to define the organization’s investment technology strategy and reimagine how members access and manage financial services. Through platform assessments, stakeholder workshops, journey mapping, and technology evaluations, we developed a modernization roadmap for a unified, compliant, and AI-ready digital experience.
Key Challenges
The organization had built long-standing relationships with Canada’s dental community through specialized advice, investment products, and insurance services, but the digital ecosystem supporting those services had become fragmented and difficult to scale.
Members navigated disconnected investment, insurance, advisor, and service experiences across multiple systems and login credentials, often relying on direct support for routine tasks. As expectations evolved, the organization needed a simpler, more connected experience that reduced friction for members and administrative burden for advisors and service teams.
Multiple Logins & Fragmented Member Experiences
Many members held several relationships with the organization, including personal investment accounts, corporate accounts, and insurance products. Accessing these services often required separate platforms, usernames, and passwords. Members lacked a single place to understand and manage their complete financial relationship.
Limited Self-Service & High Support Dependency
The existing client portal offered limited functionality and primarily served as a read-only experience. Members frequently contacted the organization’s support line or advisors to access documents, review account information, understand insurance coverage, or complete routine service requests. This created friction for members and increased administrative demand across service teams.
Legacy Technology & Operational Complexity
The organization’s investment administration platform had become difficult to maintain and adapt to changing business, regulatory, and compliance needs. Disconnected systems and manual workflows limited operational efficiency, slowed innovation, and made it harder to introduce new digital capabilities.
Complex Regulatory, Privacy, & Governance Requirements
Any modernization initiative needed to meet stringent financial services requirements. The future-state environment had to support auditability, role-based access, anti-money laundering controls, records retention, privacy, security, and Canadian data residency without compromising usability or slowing future innovation.
Approach & Solutions
1. Unified Investment & Insurance Experience
We designed a client-first portal strategy that brings investments, insurance, advisor interactions, and member services into one connected experience. The future-state vision centered on one login, one profile, and one comprehensive view of each member’s relationship with the organization.
- Designed a unified experience for accessing investment and insurance services through a single login.
- Created a consolidated profile model supporting both personal and corporate accounts.
- Defined experiences for viewing portfolio performance, policies, account activity, claims, invoices, and payments.
- Integrated secure advisor communications and document exchange into the member journey.
- Simplified navigation across previously disconnected products, accounts, and service functions.
2. Digital Self-Service & Advisor Engagement
We reimagined the portal as an engagement platform rather than a passive source of information. The strategy expanded digital self-service while creating more effective ways for members and advisors to communicate throughout the financial journey.
- Defined digital access to statements, documents, policies, and account information.
- Designed online profile management and service request experiences.
- Introduced secure advisor messaging and document-sharing workflows.
- Created guided onboarding and member engagement journeys.
- Streamlined claims, servicing, and support experiences.
- Reduced dependence on phone-based support for routine activities.
3. Investment Platform Modernization Strategy
Modernizing the investment ecosystem required more than replacing an aging platform. We assessed the organization’s business processes, operational workflows, technology environment, compliance obligations, and long-term growth priorities to create a structured transformation strategy.
- Conducted current-state technology, process, and workflow assessments.
- Documented business, operational, security, and regulatory requirements.
- Developed a vendor evaluation framework containing more than 200 criteria.
- Assessed platform options against future business and member experience needs.
- Delivered modernization recommendations and a phased transformation roadmap.
- Established a transparent, data-driven framework for future technology decisions.
4. Compliance, Privacy, & Trust by Design
Compliance was embedded directly into the future-state architecture and operating model. This ensured that improvements to the member experience would not come at the expense of governance, security, transparency, or regulatory control.
- Defined role-based access controls across member, advisor, and administrative experiences.
- Incorporated auditability and workflow governance into future-state processes.
- Addressed anti-money laundering readiness and regulatory oversight.
- Defined records retention and long-term information management requirements.
- Embedded Canadian data residency, privacy, and security controls.
- Aligned platform recommendations with the organization’s governance obligations.
5. AI-Ready Member Engagement Foundation
As part of the long-term roadmap, TechBlocks identified opportunities to use AI to create more relevant and proactive experiences for both members and advisors. The future-state vision included:
- Personalized insights based on career stage, financial goals, and account activity.
- Intelligent notifications for important financial events and service opportunities.
- Next-best-action guidance to support member engagement.
- Advisor intelligence that surfaces relevant needs and relationship opportunities.
- More tailored investment, insurance, and retirement experiences.
Impact & Results
The modernization strategy provided a structured path toward a unified member experience, greater digital adoption, lower operational complexity, and more scalable service delivery.
The future-state roadmap connected investment, insurance, advisor engagement, compliance, and self-service within one digital ecosystem. It also established the data, platform, experience, and governance foundations needed to support intelligent recommendations, advisor insights, personalized notifications, and more proactive member engagement over time.
Unified future-state member experience
The strategy brings investment accounts, insurance products, advisor interactions, documents, and member services into one connected digital journey. Members will gain a more complete view of their financial relationship through a single experience.
Digital onboarding readiness
The redesigned onboarding journey enables members to create profiles, provide information, and begin engaging digitally before direct advisor involvement. This reduces early-stage friction while allowing advisors to enter the process with better information.
Reduction in login complexity
The future-state identity strategy replaces multiple credentials and access points with a single login across investment and insurance services, significantly simplifying how members access their accounts.
Compliance by design
Privacy, security, auditability, governance, records retention, and regulatory requirements were incorporated into the future-state architecture from the outset rather than added after platform decisions were made.
